One Windmill, One Wood Walk
Distance: Approximately 2–3 miles | Duration: 30–60 minutes | Difficulty: Easy | Dog-friendly: Yes
This short circular walk from Priory Farm is a perfect morning or evening stroll. Easy underfoot, full of character, and entirely accessible from the park gates without needing a car. As the name suggests, the route passes a historic drainage windmill, one of the iconic structures that defines the Norfolk Broads landscape, before looping back through a small area of mixed woodland.
Drainage mills like the one on this route were built from the 17th century onwards to pump water from the low-lying marshes into the river channels, making the land usable for grazing. Most are now preserved rather than working, but they remain a defining feature of the Broads skyline. On this walk you will get a close-up view of the mill structure as well as open views across the surrounding grazing marshes towards the river.
The woodland section of the route provides welcome shade in summer and is a good spot for spotting woodland birds. Look out for treecreepers, nuthatches, and the occasional great spotted woodpecker. The whole loop is suitable for all abilities and is an excellent choice for a post-dinner walk in the long summer evenings. Dogs are welcome throughout and can be kept on or off lead on most of the route. Please keep them on leads near livestock.
